Chenoa McKelvey & Jonathan Alexiuk

Chenoa McKelvey and Jonathan Alexiuk have been performing together as a duo, in their trio Smith’s Onion, and in various ensembles for the past two years. They share a passion for the music of the first half of the 20th century, which can be clearly heard in their lively, energetic performances. An audience can expect to hear cheeky vocal features, burning hot swing tunes, delicate, dynamic ballads, and everything in between. Their performances are tied together with their tight, but always swinging musical interaction, and often comedic on-stage chemistry.

Chenoa McKelvey is a musician of diverse talents, blending influences from blues, country and jazz. In her guitar playing, Chenoa models her sound after the swing guitarists of the first half of the twentieth century, notable influences being Django Reinhardt, Barney Kessel, and Charlie Christian. With her lively, riff-based style of improvisation, she aims to bring her listeners back to a time when jazz was not just music for listening, but for dancing.

Jonathan Alexiuk was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB.  After graduating from John Taylor Collegiate, he began performing in Winnipeg and Kenora, and soon after on Princess Cruise Lines. He joined the Air Command Band in 2004, and served there as pianist, trombonist and arranger until 2007.
Jonathan has performed and recorded as a pianist, trumpeter, saxophonist, trombonist, clarinetist, and is a largely self-taught arranger.
