Selfies?
Questioning self-representation in the digital age
At once artist and muse, subject and object, Morgane Clément-Gagnon uses her camera to question the condition of contemporary women and the way they choose to represent themselves and support their gaze in the age of social media.
In her project "Self-Portraits?", the Montreal artist stages herself and uses her phone as a trigger to create life-size self-portraits. Her carefully composed scenes, plays on optics and color surprise the viewer and prompt them to question gender performativity, the issues of visibility, and the tensions between the control and exploitation of personal image. By printing her works on unconventional materials (beach towels, spandex, swimsuits, etc.), Morgane Clément-Gagnon also brings a tactile and interactive dimension to her creations and pushes the reflection even further by questioning the boundaries between art and everyday life.
Don't miss this unique exhibition, on display at the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre art gallery from August 27 to November 20. Join us for the opening reception on August 27 at 18 p.m., with the artist in attendance!
